"Educating Peter"
The video on educating Peter gave a good demonstration on what special needs and what different accommodations have to be made for a disabled person. The movie about Peter showed the different ways the teachers, kids, peers, and his parents treated him because of his disability. Peter's parents thought he was deaf for the first part of his life because he seemed to be a little bit slow to learning. I know that if I am a parent of a disabled child, I would want to know exactly what my child's disability is before I go and make certain special accommodations for him/her. Peter's parents felt the need to send him to a school that treated children's special needs but when they visited the school they felt that it wasn't a right fit for Peter.
Therefore, Peter's parents decided to put him into a normal public school and have the normal teachers accommodate for Peter's needs. When they interviewed one of the teachers on the movie, the teacher said that it was definitely pretty rough at first and it took a little time to make sure that Peter was learning what he needed to be learning. I know that if I have a special needs student in my classroom while I'm teaching that I will definitely try my best to make sure that the student is not excluded from every activity and learning opportunity available. I want all of the students to have an equal opportunity. The teacher in the movie seemed to do a good job and it was nice to see that there was a special education teacher that assisted Peter in a lot of his schoolwork...
