Part One: 1984
In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Orwell predicts what life will be like in England in the year 1984, thirty-six years after he wrote the book. He chose to write about 1984 by reversing the last two digits of the year in which he started to write it in, 1948. Several of Orwell's predictions have become a reality, several may still become a reality in the future, and several are no longer significant in today's world due to the fact that the Soviet Union is no longer in existence. At the time when the book was written, it was a very strong novel. Today, it is still a very good piece of literature because it demonstrates what still might happen in the future and what people thought back in the middle of the twentieth century.
One of the predictions which is now a reality is that products and services are the exact opposite of what they are called. In the book, the Ministry of Truth deals with lies, the Ministry of Love deals with hate, the Ministry of Peace deals with war, and the Ministry of Plenty deals with scarceness and poverty. Today, there are similar deceptions. For example, life insurance is the insurance in case of death death, but its name makes it sound like it is insurance in case of life, as disability insurance is insurance in case of disability and malpractice insurance is insurance in case of malpractice. Another example is the prefix "inter-" means "between," but there are interstate highways in Hawaii even though they cannot and do not connect Hawaii to a different state...
