How has mining at Jabiluka affected the environment and communities of that area?
Energy Resources of Australia's (ERA) Jabiluka development has become one of the most controversial developments in Australian history. The opponents of the project have led a passionate public campaign against the project, staging protests at the Jabiluka site, which is one of the primary causes of conflict. The Jabiluka Uranium Mine has caused much divide within communities and is a major ethical issue. The opposition to Jabiluka is multi layered and complex. The complexity is compounded by the fact that it is not a simple two-sided argument and there are no simple solutions. This project has both positive and negative effects on the physical environment, the general community and in particular the Mirrar tribe community.
One of the many factors that make Jabiluka a controversial project is its location in the Kakadu National Park, which is inscribed on the World Heritage List. Kakadu covers 19,804 square kilometres in the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia.
