If I could sum up in one single statement in which I believe in the most it would be simply “Carpe Diem”. The translation from Latin means Seize the Day. I didn’t always truly understand what it meant. I just thought it sounded cool. But there was once a man in my life, my uncle who inspired me to live by that philosophy. My Uncle, Sgt. Tracy A. Torres passed away one year and 6 months ago. He had a very rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. It’s a form of cancer that usually afflicts children under the age of 10. He faced his cancer the way he lived his life, with vigor, courage, arrogance, optimism, strength and humor. Just being my Uncle and the kind of person he was made him a hero to me and to everyone he ever knew. He was very patriotic too and very proud to have been born on the 4th of July. He served 19 years in the US Army National Guard and the Army Reserves until his death on March 27, 2002.
