THE ROLE OF THE SETTING IN "THE INTERLOPERS" BY SAKI
Prompt: In the short story "The Interlopers" Saki uses setting to impact the story in a variety of ways. Discuss two ways Saki uses setting to affect the story.
In "The Interlopers" by Saki, the setting plays a vital role. Two aspects of the story that are affected by the setting are conflict and mood. The importance of the setting is first illustrated when Saki describes the central conflict, the feud between the two main families, and how it came about over a piece of land, the setting in which the story takes place. The two families, the Gradwitzs and the Znaeyms, have a long history of not getting along. The problem exists because of discrepancies in the laws over who actually owns the land that borders their two properties. Saki describes a little bit of this history here,
"it was the most jealously guarded of all its owner's territorial possessions. A famous lawsuit, in the days of his [Ulrich von Gradwitz] grandfather .....
