Chapter One of Walden is called, "economy". Walden is a first person narration of the events in the life of Henry David Thoreau for the two years he lived in a cottage near Walden Pond. Thoreau shows the reader how he no longer lives at Walden Pond any more, but only lived there in the first place to get away from the evils of the human spirit such as materialism and acquisition. He goes into a lot of detail to explain his life and how he feels that as humans we get over burdened with our work and our possessions. He goes on to say that he wanted to go into the woods and build his house to start a fresh new life, a changing of the seasons. He symbolizes a snake shedding its skin as going out with old and in with the new. Thoreau seeks self-actualization of his life. He wants to put his life in perspective. Once he does this he realizes how much his life differs from the rest of society.
I can relate to what Thoreau says because it's real to me...
