In negotiating our new Settlement, the grievance procedure was a very important part of the discussions. We were able to streamline some aspects, and tighten up the language that controls the employee Unity grievance.
Instead of having 5 steps, including arbitration, it has been reduced down to just 3. The time frames have also changed somewhat, but just at the Step 1 level.
The time to file a grievance still stands at 14 days from the date of incident. This is very important, as once this time has elapsed, you cannot file a Unity grievance. And if you do file a Unity grievance, then you cannot file under the merit system, and vice versa.
In explaining the different steps of the procedure, we hope that you as a member/employee will become more involved in case you must file a Unity grievance.
If a grievance is filed that does not concern a grievous loss, such as a written reprimand, an overtime pay issue, or other such matters that do not provide a loss in regular pay or time to you as an employee, then, depending on the merit of the grievance, it can be sent to Step 2.
