Relating war and sports, from the readings I discovered that sportscasters and sportswriters attempt to compare the two, they attempt to place sports positions as an equal to military unit structures, although they may be similar in theory there functions are at different ends of the social spectrum. Sports are for entertainment, health and recreation, War is an attempt in conflict to protect our way of life and our rights as American citizens. In both you must have commitment, teamwork, self-discipline, and physical fitness; this was the basis for President Eisenhower's famous declaration " The true mission of American Sports is to prepare young people for war".
I agree with President Eisenhower's declaration; during the "Great War", General Eisenhower determined that the European soldiers demonstrated a much higher level of physical fitness and self-discipline than the American soldiers demonstrated, his belief was that American Athletes participating in organized sports had a higher level of physical fitness and self-discipline enforced by teamwork, this belief led to his famous declaration. President Eisenhower's suspicions were confirmed after he read a research report that indicated that American children were less physically fit than European children. President Eisenhower in July 1956 established the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, as the President's Council on Youth Fitness.
Relating sports to the structure-function paradigm, the function of sports is for advancement of skill, knowledge, physical fitness in which may lead to extremely high paying jobs and wealth. Sports also have many effects including social relationships, team and individual competition in sporting events and personnel advancement.
