In 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare, there are 2 main characters they are Hamlet and Laertes. Laertes has been analyzed by many critics and have come to the conclusion that Hamlet and Laertes are parallel characters in the play, and at the same time they are different from each other in certain features.
Character like Laertes is often used by Shakespeare to compare the behavior, actions and emotions of the main character of the play, Hamlet, throughout the play. They are also important in 'Hamlet' as they are imperative to the plot of the play and the final resolution. Shakespeare placed these two characters: Hamlet and Laertes into similar circumstances, which is the way that each of them comes to grief of their fathers' deaths and the way they planned their vengeance. Laertes is a mirror to Hamlet but different to Hamlet in certain crucial features. Shakespeare has made them similar in many aspects to provide a greater base for comparison when avenging their respective fathers' deaths. Both Hamlet and Laertes love Ophelia in different ways.
