Our Everyday Heroes
Firefighters have always been seen as heroes, because they sacrifice their own lives to save another's. If this is not the very definition of hero, then what is? Firefighters put their lives at risk everyday, and they have been doing this for the past four hundred years. The first firehouse for the Fire Department of New was built in 1736. But have you ever wondered why firefighters where those odd-shaped hats? Or why fire engines are red and not yellow or green? Or why we call it the Fire Department of New York, and not New York's Fire Department?
These are just a few questions that many people have, but few people research their answers. The Fire Department of New York has always been somewhat of a fascination for people, but they became even more emphasized after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Buildings. But how did they go from volunteers to paid, uniformed firefighters?..
