In order to explain the strengths and weaknesses of utopian thinking I will first give a brief over view of utopianism and its main disguises. Once I have the ground work settled I will highlight the strengths and weaknesses with regard to the main themes of utopianism and finish of this exploration with a brief look at the strengths and weaknesses of utopian thinking with regards to the future.
WHAT IS UPOPIAN THINKING
The (Sociology Dictionary) explains that utopian thinking is at the heart what defines us as humans. It is our capacity to think of alternative futures. The dictionary also goes on the Utopian thinking is our ability to imagine a perfect society or ideal commonwealth.
The term utopia is commonly used in a derogative context to indicate unrealistic thoughts.
From these descriptions it quickly becomes obvious the utopian thinking is commonly used across society and without actually using the word Utopia, people utilise utopian thinking regularly to either escape of understand or modify their current situation in life.
TYPES OF UTOPIA
There are two main areas of utopian thinking. These two areas have a lengthy list of descriptive names; I will refer to them as "Escape" and "Reconstructive" utopianisms.
