The 3rd movement of Mozart's piano sonata in A major, entitled Rondo alla Turca is an unusual adaptation of rondo form. Rather that using the A section as the rondo theme, as is usually characteristic of rondo form, Mozart uses the B section as the theme, the A section and the C section being the episodes. Typical rondo form has the structure ABACA. In this movement Mozart uses the structure ABCBAB followed by a coda. Another interesting feature in this movement is the Turkish influence on the music. It imitates the drums and melodies of Turkish Janissary bands, the music of which was in vogue at the time this piece was composed. Various other works of the time imitate the music, including Mozart's opera "The Abduction from the Seraglio" but it does not typically feature in any of Mozart's other sonatas. The movement begins in the tonic minor and ends in the tonic major, again this is rather unusual for Mozart.
The A section is in itself like a self contained journey as far a structure is concerned. It is in rounded binary from, starting in the tonic key (A minor) going to the dominant at the end of the first section and then working its way back to the tonic for the end of the second section...
