The Positives of the Internet
Mr. Stoll seems to think that the internet has made our society less social and more geared towards staying in our homes at all costs. I would have to disagree with his ideas of the impacts of the internet on people's social status, and skills. He seems to have some good arguments against the internet, but what he doesn't seem to reveal are all the positives about the internet and the choices that it gives us.
The internet may cause some people to have less social contact with people that are geographically close to them, but it allows people to be 'close' to people that are far away. The internet allows someone who may have moved for a job, school, or other reason stay in close contact with the people they left behind. If someone is feeling lonely and shy in a new place they still have the ability to connect to a familiar person when needed easier and more frequently that with the phone or mail. Because of the internet people are able to choose who they want to be social with instead of being forced to have contact with people they may not feel connected to. If a person goes on a trip for a short period of time they are not going to try and socialize with the people they are around, but with the internet they are still able to have human interaction, with the people they are close to.
The internet gives people the ability to choose what kind of social personality they want to be...
