King Lear Character Essay
Shakespeare's famous tragedy, King Lear reveals the story of King Lear, a king in Ancient England who divides up his kingdom to his three daughters. Lear expects for his privileges as King to stay but his responsibility to be gone and plans on living with his three daughters. When Cornelia, his favorite daughter refuses to profess her love towards her father, he banishes her from the family and kingdom creating other plots and problems within the play. In King Lear there are many different types of characters, some with certain flaws and others who make the audience feel sorry for them. King Lear, Kent, Gloucester, Goneril and Regan are all characters who are flawed whether by jealously, their temper, or simply ignorance but others such as Albany, Edgar, Lear and even Edmund cause the reader to feel sorry for them due to their circumstances.
King Lear, the protagonist of the story has one major flaw, his stubbornness. Lear tends to reject correction such as when Kent lashes out at him and when the Fool tells him that he has made a stupid mistake. Lear should have listened to their advice and had he; he might not have gone through all the difficulties of the tragedy. Lear's stubbornness was perhaps most prevalent in his dealings with is daughter Cornelia, who was his favorite. When she refused to praise him of his greatness in front of all his friends, King Lear was extremely harsh and banished her from the family and the kingdom, taking away her dowry also...
