Soon after the Civil Rights movement the world was about to come face to face with a culture of new attitudes on personal relationships, drugs, and music. This shocked many Americans because people called "The Counterculture" changed the look and feel of American society. In the 1950's the "Average American " consisted of a 9-5 job, a suit and tie, happy go lucky way of life just like the show, Leave it to Beaver which aired in the 1960's. In the 1960's the old look of responsibility and success was thrown out the window. In comes the new generation, "The Counterculture", with "flower power" as their motto, they changed the way they dressed, acted, and spoke, to become different from the typical American. By wearing bright colors, beads, flowers, the traditional long hair and occasionally the misuse of drugs.
The members of the counterculture were called hippies, these people valued youth and individuality. They promoted peace, love, freedom and experimented with new types of music, dress and attitude. The difference in opinion between the older and younger generations led to a "generation gap". This young generation had a major impact on American Society because it was the largest generation caused by the "baby boom" after WWII...
