Could you imagine living in the 1800's, as a woman, with views different from the majority of your society? This happened to Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe. She was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, on June 14, 1811. She was the seventh of nine children.
Harriet's childhood was a bit out of the ordinary, especially for a woman at that time. Her father, Lyman Beecher, was a clergyman and teacher. Her mother, Roxana Foote Beecher, died when she was around six years old.
Harriet received her formal education at Litchfield Academy and at the small private school for young women that had been established by her sister Catherine in Hartford, Connecticut. More important in her development, however, was her father. He was the most powerful Puritian preacher of his generation in the United States...
