Account for the Victory of the Bolsheviks

In October 1917 the Bolshevik successfully won the revolution and seized power from the Provisional Government. The Red Guards led by Trotsky took control of the main centres of power and attacked the Winter Palace arresting the Provisional Government members. There are a number of reasons for Bolshevik victory. Firstly the set up of the Provisional Government and the dual authority it had with the Petrograd Soviets, Lenin's leadership, The April Crises for the Government, The Kornilov affair, and the role of Trotsky.
The Provisional Government could be said to have failed from the start. It was not elected by the people so therefore lacked authority over Russia. Russian people were also not going to support a Government that they felt no loyalty towards, and had no firm policies that were appealing to them. This lack of support would put an even huger amount of pressure of the Government when dealing with the Nations problems. There were also divisions amongst the Provisional Government members. The Government was made up of Liberals, Social Revolutionaries and Mensheviks...
