The Battle of Language among the Sexes
Throughout time women have gained many rights in the United States. They started their lives in this country as a form of property, and they ended up having equal rights to men. But are women entirely equal to men? There remains a constant battle among the sexes in the way people use the English language, and men are the ones who are winning. This battle not only creates communication mishaps between the sexes, but it also treats women with discriminations. The problems are mostly comprised of the way people speak in workplace, the double standard set for women, and in the common language people use everyday.
The workplace shelters major discrimination in the English language. In the workplace, women in managerial positions will phrase requests much different than a man in the same position. Women tend to "avoid giving orders" and are often more "comfortable with decision making by consensus, and tend to phrase requests as questions" (Tannen 249). However, men tend to phrase requests as a command because they enjoy the feeling of authority and power in the workplace...
