In the book, Nicolaides wrote the first thing that student must do is keep trying and practice more. They need to keep drawing and making some mistakes. That's the real method to learn how to draw in right form. If the student missed any step, it's just wasting their time and better to start it over. Whatever how much they read, if they never experience it, that's still learning nothing.
In a word, "gesture" means the pose, the movement and the feelings behind the action. "Contour" means the outline, the shape and external form of the figure. It have three dimensional quality in it and we would understand the structure of the model..
A real good example that author said is about the tree. Trees are growing from bottom to up, when we started to draw it, we suppose drawing it upward (bottom to top, wood to the small branches)..
