Did you ever wonder why the famous American board game Monopoly is called Monopoly? You do everything possible to buy out all property and companies to have total control and money. Then you win! Business monopolies work the same way, except you just cannot win. Webster's Dictionary defines monopoly as an exclusive control of a commodity or service in a given market, or control that makes possible the fixing of prices and the virtual elimination of free competition. (480). There are many factors that contribute to a business monopoly. Throughout this paper I am going to show the forces and history behind monopolies, the laws, and an example of a past and a present monopoly.
