part 1 of this movie we heard personal accounts of people's experiences with Ellis Island. Some of the recounts were of the hardships endured. Other accounts were about the joy of arriving in such a great place. The bulk of the movie was contained in part 2 of the movie. Before Ellis Island was an immigration depot, it was a fortification for the harbor. In 1892 it opened its doors. Up until that date, all immigration in that area was handled by Castle Garden. At this time immigration was on the rise, so Castle Garden was not able to handle this new load efficiently. Ellis Island handled its job very well, processing over 5,000 immigrants a day. It had a very routine way of processing its immigrants...
