Britain had been taking steps towards a democratic country since 1832 when the Great Reform act was introduced, however it could have been considered that the most important steps were those taken between 1867 and 1918. These years had been pillars of many changes, there were three reform acts within this time as well as a war affecting everyone and everything in Britain. What had been the cause of a democracy being ruled in Britain in 1968?
The parliamentary 1832 Reform act wanted to be rid of rotten boroughs completely and many points in the act gave qualifications that had to be true if you wanted, or were eligible to vote. Is was the first attempt from the government to head towards democracy which started and contributed to the other parliamentary acts and movements.
The 1832 reform act increased the electorate to one in six males being able to vote. It was an increase of 200,000 people having the ability to vote. Over the next 30 years bribery, intimidation and corruption would still continue in general elections. Which meant although you were able to vote you would not necessarily be able to vote for who you wanted...
