Imagine three days ago, sitting in Haymarket Square, enjoying your nice evening cup of coffee and something to eat when all of a sudden a crowd starts to appear. You think to yourself, "Oh this diverse crowd must be gathering around me because I am so cool and all, and they want to be near me," but once you realize that this is definitely not the case you start to worry. The crowd is growing larger and you notice that the people in the crowd are not only workers, but many are supporters as well.
A day earlier, May 3rd, during a riot police at the McCormick Reaper factory shot several men. This was due to a strike that was taking place at the plant. The police attacked the Chicago rally, which supported the eight-hour workday. Many men held up signs stating, "Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will!" A demonstration was then called for the following day by a group of mainly German-born anarchist workers living in Chicago. This meeting was to be held at Haymarket Square. The gathering was to be protest against police violence, but that did not turn out to be the case...
