THE BREAKING OF A WILL The ten plagues written about in Exodus could be interpreted in so many ways. The search for an explanation could go on forever. The reader’s knowledge of the subject, views and own beliefs contribute to how a piece of the literary work of the Bible could be interpreted. I believe that the ten plagues was part of God’s way to break down Pharaoh’s will, to demonstrated that His power was above that of any idol, and that He alone was worthy of worship. And it shows that He sometimes chooses a path of deliverance that can make things worse before they get better. The first plague where God had the water of the Nile turn into blood and all the fish died in my opinion was to prove to Pharaoh that he was the Lord, not just someone else telling him to let the Israelites free. It was not a hoax or a joke. But since Pharaohs magicians could do the same (Ex. 7:22), I think Pharaoh did not believe anything that was being said to him. I also believe that the Lord chose to contaminate the Nile because it was one of the major factors influencing the Egyptians’ ability to survive in that region, and it showed how powerful he was.
