The Bell Jar
The novel begins the summer the Rosenbergs were electrocuted. Esther Greenwood, the narrator, was in New York after winning a fashion magazine contest. For winning the contest she was given the opportunity to become an intern at the magazine for the summer. While she was in New York she stayed at the Amazon along with twelve other girls, who were also working for the magazine that summer. They had to stay at an all female hotel. This was because most of the girls were daughters of wealthy parents who wanted to keep them away from boys.
Esther and Doreen, one of the other girls working for the magazine, went out for some drinks. They ended up meeting some men, Lenny and Frankie. This is where Esther firsts introduces Buddy Willard, a Yale boy from back home. She compares the men that they had just met to him...
