The Daily Mail newspaper currently has the second largest circulation figure in the UK with roughly 2.3 million issues being sold daily. It has been a popular paper since it was launched on 4th May 1896 when it sold 397,215 copies, which was the most ever sold before by one newspaper in one day. 'This event has always been regarded as one of the great turning points in the history of the press'. There are various factors which contributed to the success of the Daily Mail and enabled it to be the only national daily newspaper to remain in the same family ownership for the entire twentieth century.
The repeal of stamp duty in 1855 meant papers could be cheaper and brought about a completely new market of readers. People's interests were changing and they wanted to hear about Association Football, horse races and crime such as that of the Jack the Ripper murders between 1888 and 1889. Therefore the second half of the nineteenth century saw a decline in coverage of political speeches and parliamentary debates being replaced by sport and society news. Before the Daily Mail was established development of the railways meant that distribution was quicker and easier and newspapers could reach more places.
