There are many little things in life that we could not live without. All the little things that we do or that happen to us are apart of who we are. In "A small, good thing", it shows all the little things that happen throughout the lives of the family when something tragic has happened. It's always good to do something small and good to make things a little better for yourself.
One of the small, good things in the story is Scotty. Ann and Howard had the perfect life, everything was going very well and they were a middle class family and they had a child. So when Scotty ends up in the hospital they are very upset by this and can't hardly believe that it had happened. Another small, good thing is prayers. When Ann is praying in the hospital room and she tells her husband that he should be praying as well and he said that he already had been. This shows that they care deeply and are really worried about their boy, Scotty...
