About November of 1995 I had to drive a proposed pipeline route. I reserved the company 4 wheel drive. Three others were going to the client's site that day to do other field tasks. The client's site was about 2 hours away. When I tried to pick up the 4WD keys the night before the trip I was told that it was against company policy to allow 2 vehicles to be used on the same day for the same client and destination. They were afraid it would appear we were trying to overbill the client. I tried for 30 minutes to explain that the CLIENT had told me to bring the 4WD, but they kept saying 4 people, you get the car. I went about 3 ranks over the receptionist/key keeper, to no avail. So, the 4 of us drive in the 2 day old car to the client site. The other 3 did what they had to do at the client's building, including some time-certain appointments. Meanwhile I'm alternating between standing around and itching to get out to the pipeline route. But that's not overbilling the CLIENT, right?
