This essay will assess the success of the Australian Government's Aboriginal policies since World War Two. It will discuss a number of these policies and critically analyze the successes of each of these policies.
One of the policies implemented was the assimilation policy. In the 1950's and as late as 1967 it was felt that all aborigines and half-castes needed to accept the white Australian's way of life. Aborigines needed to live like white Australians, so children were taken away from their families, reserves and special missionaries were set up to help aborigines become more like us. The assimilation policy was not successful and many people now call the generation involved "The Stolen Generation". Rallies have been held even as recently as 2000 to try to make the Government say "sorry".
In 1967 a Referendum was held to give the Federal government the powers to pass laws for the aboriginal people. Before the Referendum aboriginal people were controlled by the states. The referendum was held on the 27th of May 1967...
