Karl Popper was a respected philosopher of the twentieth century and possibly his greatest contributions to the theory of knowledge was his investigation of the logic of scientific discovery. Popper argued that the only way in which to reach a conclusion was through the method of deduction. [8] "What really makes science grow is new ideas, including false ideas"[9] Louis Pasteur used this method of falsification to refute the theory of spontaneous generation and demonstrated that microorganisms are everywhere.
A rationalist argues that knowledge derives principally from reason where an empiricist claims that knowledge originates from our senses. Without the senses we would not be able to receive any kind of knowledge, as we need to be able to see things and hear what people are telling you. It's often said that 'you have to see it to believe it' however this can't always be true because there are some things which we can't see but because we have been told by someone who has authority over us which leads us to believe in that certain thing. For example we cannot see that the world is round yet the majority of people believe it.
