When one thinks of a good piece of fictional literature, one usually thinks of a piece that employs a number of significant literary elements. These elements are meant to add a depth to the piece that would not be obtained if a group of characters were simply allowed to fall through a series of events. Among the most interest enticing elements is symbolism, specifically that which is found in a religious allegory. "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, is a short story that makes use of a great deal of symbolism to shed light on the religious undertones that provide the basis for this story.
The story begins with a family of six taking a trip to Florida. The grandmother, however, would rather go to Tennessee because she has "connections" there and also because she was afraid of a killer that was out on the loose called the Misfit. The family continues on to Florida as planned with nobody paying attention to the grandmother's discontent. The family then stops at a filling station called The Tower for rest and some food. The owner of the station was a man named Red Sammy Butts. While the family was waiting for their orders, Red Sammy began conversing with the grandmother about the fact that nobody could be trusted anymore...
