Erik Erikson's Theory of Emotional Development
According to the Life of Tiffany
Throughout life a person may go through many changes, both physically and emotionally. Today, many people would agree, for the most part, with this statement. However, previously, many thought that emotional development, the process of growth and maturation, was an event solely of childhood. Erik Erikson was one of the first psychoanalysts who suggested that this kind of development occurs throughout a person's lifetime. Erikson developed a psychosocial theory of emotional development that looks at the impacts of parents and society on the evolution of one's personality that occurs from early childhood to throughout adulthood (Wade & Tavris 2002).
Erikson's theory proposes that there are eight main stages of development through which a person must progress in order to achieve optimal emotional health. During each stage there is a central conflict that must be dealt with. These conflicts can be handled in either a positive way that will promote growth or in a negative manner that will make it difficult to overcome the remaining stages. Erikson believed that if a stage was not resolved properly the individual will struggle with the resulting problems over and over again throughout life (Wade & Tavris 2002).
