1984 Questions 1. Newspeak relates to the ideas in Orwell’s essay “Politics and the English Language” in a couple of different ways. Orwell dedicates a paragraph of his essay to write about ‘pretentious diction.’ He explains how people choose different words for different reasons. Orwell uses the example that people use foreign words to give their writing an “air of culture and elegance” (Orwell, 197) in newspeak words are not meant to express emotion but are merely meant to get the message across. In newspeak people use the least amount of words possible, example instead of well they would say goodwise, simply combining the basic words of newspeak to form other words. Orwell talks about this is “Politics and the English Language” when he speaks of ‘meaningless words’ and how people do not hear the word but instead what the word has come to mean overtime. Orwell uses the example of fascism. Many people do not know how fascism works or the principles that it is based upon they only know that it represents something bad. 2. The loss of thought it a very strong theme throughout 1984. The society which Winston lives in is based upon people developing no thoughts or opinions of their own, and ingesting everything the party says. In “Shooting an Elephant” Orwell describes how he did not think of what was right, but would leave him looking like a hero instead of a fool.
