Performing Your Identity
How can you characterize someone emphasizing masculinity or highlighting femininity? By beginning to even characterize, all we are doing is stereotyping. If I wake up in the morning and go for a run without brushing my teeth, am I performing in a masculine manner? If so, how can that be characterized masculine? If I go to a party and have on a tight top, can I still be highlighting femininity if the guy standing next to me has on a muscle shirt? I spent my weekend wondering how we can even begin classifying masculine and feminine behaviors in individuals and ourselves.
I went to an after-party for a show Saturday night. In preparation for the party, the first thing I did was decided what to wear. I wanted to wear something that was eye-catching, and at the same time be something that I felt comfortable having on. After going through several outfits, I came to the one that I knew would achieve this...
