Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat. And it is becoming a serious health problem among adolescents, with over 23% of children considered obese. Obesity in children results in many emotional and physical problems, such as altered body image, depression, and poor self-esteem. The numbers are growing. The surgeon general has stated that in 2003, 13% of children aged 6-11 and 14% of adolescents aged 12-19 in Australia were overweight. These figures have nearly tripled for adolescents in the past 2 decades.
The more obese a child is and the longer a child remains obese, the more likely the child will become an obese adult. According to the Kid source, obese children have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. And according to the National Centre for Nutrition and Dietetics, adult obesity increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
