Adolescent Sexuality
When considering the two stories in Adolescent Portraits as well as the chapter reading in The Developing Child, I have come to a very surprising conclusion. My conclusion is that it is a necessity for parents to discuss sexuality and specifically moral standards to their children. I am not suggesting that adolescents exposed to sexual education at school are ignorant of the risks involved, actually I believe that most adolescents know about reproduction, STD's, and how to use a condom at a relatively young age. I remember going through sexual education in jr. high school. We were told of the risks and shown how to use a condom, most of the students were snickering and when the condoms were passed out for us to look at there were condom balloons flying all over the auditorium. I doubt the effectiveness of such assemblies, I think that the answer lies instead in the home with the parent.
In Graham's story for instance, his parents never discussed sexual activity with him. He weighed his self worth on whether the opposite sex found him attractive, which led to his promiscuity. I know that this is also the case with many adolescents, I myself felt the same way in high school...
