In the United States it is one of the most common medical problems and the numbers of those affected by depression in other industrialized and developing countries continue to rise at a phenomenal rate. It Depression affects an estimated 2 million Filipinos and 20 million Americans each year. can affect anyone at any age, even toddlers. Statisticians say it affects women twice as often as men, but I personally do not agree with that. What I do believe is that twice as many women seek treatment for depression, as men are less likely to admit they have a problem with depression.
Depression is not limited to mental illness. It is an illness of the entire organism. It affects the spirit, the emotions, the mind's ability to concentrate and remember, attention span, moods, thoughts and behavior. It can affect the way you eat, the way you sleep, the way you think about and react to the people around you and the way you feel about yourself. It also predisposes those who suffer from it to physical illnesses that are indeed pathogenic...
