Sleep has an important effect on weight loss, and when we do not get our sleep our metabolism suffers. Sleep is critically important to quality of life and overall well being. Let's face it; on sleep starved days you usually greet the morning knowing the day's going to be a bummer. Your performance on the job and with relationships suffers, your mood fluctuates and chances are you're going to make a beeline straight for the office donuts and coffee.
The inability to sleep, also called insomnia, is not a disease. Rather, it is a symptom of a larger lifestyle imbalance, individual and cultural. We are all overdoing life to an extent that sleep deprivation is a choice. I often refer to this as overdoingitis, which I mentioned in the last chapter.
Sleep is both a fundamental need and the ultimate elixir for health, but it's also probably the most undervalued human need in our society. We are just not getting enough of it...
