“A Child Called ‘It’” illustrates such a hate between a son and his mother, that it causes the mother to brutally beat her very own child, the main character in the novel. You’d think that hate would exchange back and fourth between them; mother to son, son to mother. But through violent blows and piercing words, Dave (the son) constantly suggests forgiveness after beating sessions with Mother. Dave Pelzer challenged me to think about life in a completely different fashion with his courage to carry on through his every day hell in such a way, that after reading the book, the story continued to cycle through my mind. When the last page was turned, and the last words were absorbed into my memory, a tremendous load of guilt was dumped upon my back. Dave’s commitment almost made me jealous. Here he was, being brutally beaten every day by his Mother, and here I am, brutally beating words of unthankful ness and selfishness to my parents every day.
