This teacher's guide is designed to engage students in middle school and high school in stimulating activities that will generate awareness of and interest in the life and works of one of the most famous and celebrated writers of the twentieth century - and especially in The Old Man and the Sea, acknowledged by many as Ernest Hemingway's best work. Students will learn about Hemingway's life and consider how that life is reflected in his writing. They will examine his terse and direct writing style - a style that has had a profound effect on many contemporary writers who have tried to emulate it. They will consider the symbolism in the tale of the old man and his battle with the giant fish, and they will explore the use of symbolism in Teacher's Resource Guide, advertising, and in other parts of their daily lives.
