A book by John Steinbeck called The Pearl, is about a pearl diver who gets caught up one day in his discovery, blocks out his life, and focus' on his huge pearl. The story starts out with a pearl diver named Kino, his honey-tongued wife Juana, and their little baby boy Coyotito. The 1900's were a tough time, especially for the natives of Mexico, trying to compete with the Spanish. Kino and Juana have a nice life, very peaceful, until their beloved son Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, and needs to see a doctor immediately. Juana, carrying her precious son, rushes over to the doctors with Kino and the townspeople. The doctor is of the Spanish, and doesn't allow the natives in. Kino and Juana are heart-broken. Their son, who is their pride and joy, may die due to the sting.
While out diving for pearls, Juana makes a poultice for Coyotito's swollen skin. As Kino emerges into the waters, he finds an oyster that looks like it beholds something great...
