In the book The Pearl, Kino is a man that needs money badly to save his sons life but doesn't have any. So he goes diving for pearls so he could pay the doctor but when he firsts goes down there he doesn't know what he is getting himself into. One morning Kino was getting ready for breakfast, which was being prepared by his lovely and obedient wife, Juana. When all of a sudden he sees a scorpion crawling into the babies crib. Kino is getting ready for one swift strike at the scorpion when all of a sudden the scorpion strikes. Kino slaps the scorpion away in anger and Juana enters the room. Juana begins to suck the venom out of the baby's shoulder and all Kino can do is watch and wait. Juana spits out all the poison she can and calls for the doctor. All the people in the village know that he won't come because Kino's family is poor and they can't afford to pay him. The doctor won't come so they decide to go to him...
