Zora Neale Hurston was born approximately on Jan. 7, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama. Hurston grew up in Florida. She graduated from Morgan Academy in 1918, attended Howard and Columbia University in 1928. After college, when Hurston began working as an ethnologist, she combined fiction and her knowledge of culture. Hurston's best-known work was published in 1937: Their Eyes Were Watching God. This literary piece was exceptional and helped Hurston earn her credentials as a writer. Zora Neale Hurston's strained relationships with other African American writers, the theme regarding the dreams of women and the theme of male dominance will be discussed.
