The Giver, by Lois Lowry is about a boy, Jonas, who lives in a community where everything is perfectly controlled. When the book begins, Jonas is about to be assigned the job that he is to do for the rest of his life. This assignment is announced annually at a ceremony to the "12's." Jonas is not assigned a job. Instead, he is "selected" to be the next Giver, which is a very honorable job in the community. The Giver's job is to retain the memories from the past and pass them onto the next Receiver. Soon after Jonas begins his training for his new job, his father brings home a baby from the nursery where he works, whose name is Gabriel. It is at this point of the book where Jonas begins to learn of the harsh reality of his community. He discovers that people are killed when they are not perfect or when they become too old. With this new knowledge he decided that living with people who are completely oblivious to life is worthless...
