MARLEE MATLIN: AN INSPIRATION

Marlee Matlin is quite possibly one of the world's most renowned deaf people. When she was only 18 months old she lost her hearing to a fever associated with the measles called Roseola. She lost complete hearing in one ear and 80% in the other. She has been signing since she was only 5 and she learned to speak even before that. She was quoted saying "When I began to sign and speak at the same time, the whole world opened up to me", in an article in business week.
She began acting when she was 7 years old, starring as Dorothy in the play the Wizard of Oz. Marlee's first on screen staring role was the character "Sarah" in the film Children of a lesser God. She won the Best Actress Oscar for her role, becoming the youngest winner at age 21. Also one in a handful of people for winning during a film debut. She has also had roles in films such as Fear No Evil, The Players, and The Man in the Golden Mask, among others...
