We do not live in a pure, direct-democratic system. We live in a democratic-republic, in which we elect officials to represent their constituency in office. Direct-democracy, in which citizens vote on each individual issue and the government is controlled by the populous, is a slow process which is heavily influenced by the passions of a society at that given moment. Our republican form of democracy has worked so well, mastering the wordage of the Federalist paper No. 51 "In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: You must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself." This is intrinsically difficult to do.
Democracy is a form of government also that has given us the openness to debate deep issues of importance to many groups. It has also shown us the dangers of apathy in the system. We must be involved. We must work, and be fundamentally driven to our specific goals, for the system...
