In 1879 Henrik Ibsen wrote A Doll's House. In Norway at this time (and the rest of the Western world), the issue of women's rights was intensely topical. "It aroused extraordinary controversy wherever it was staged or read; and by the end of the century, there was scarcely a civilized country where it had not been performed".# The issues covered in A Doll's house were so controversial that Ibsen was made to consider rewriting the ending of the play. The re-written ending consisted of Nora watching over her children as she was about to leave, and breaking down in tears ultimately resulting in her staying.
The year is 2004, and on today's news was a story of how men in the same occupation as women get paid on average 18% more in the same position. The issue of gender and equality has been extremely topical for years. The struggle women face to be seen as equal in a world that is male. Gradually women fought to be seen as equal but what sacrifices have had to be made? In this case in Iben's play A Dolls House we see the leading female protagonist leaving the only life she knows to "find herself" and by doing this she leaves behind not only her home, but her husband and children...
