The piece of art that I chose to critique is named The Adoration of the Shepherds. This beautiful and enthusiastic piece of work was completed by El Greco (the Greek) somewhere between 1612 and 1614. This Cretan born painter, sculptor, and architect settled moved many places throughout his life including Venice, Rome, and Spain signing his paintings under his real name of Domenikos Theotocopoulos. Many of Greco's paintings created using cold eerie colors which expressed intense religious feelings.
As I wandered throughout the endless technological library at our fingertips (commonly called the internet) I was enthralled by the intensity of the works of Greco. The amazing power and feelings that he expressed of scenes that have been painted many times before was incredible. It's apparent that Greco was talented well beyond his time, and I believe his artwork would fit into any common day art gallery of the present very well. What I was looking for when I chose Greco's work was a piece that was different from the more common and acceptable pieces of his time. For someone who lived in the mid 16th to early 17th century to create a piece of art that could create the mythical appearance of enchantment while still maintaining the religious benefits there of, it quite different.
This piece is quite powerful...
