Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles. For most of her early life she was in foster homes or orphanages because her father abandoned her, while her mom, Gladys Monroe Baker, had to work and then was in a mental hospital. Norma Jean grew up using the name Mortenson, and at the age of 16 discovered that her dad probably wasn't Mortenson. (" Monroe, Marilyn" Microsoft Encarta 99) It was believed that Norma Jean was the result of Gladys Baker's relationship with a co-worker at the Consolidated Film Industries Lab, where she was employed, though Stanley Gifford did not accept responsibility, nor contribute to the office fund, circulated to assist Gladys in paying the hospital costs. At the age of 9, Marilyn was no longer able to stay with her mother Gladys, so she was put in an orphanage for 2 years. In 1938 she was placed in care of her mom's friend Grace Goddard, and her 3 children in a Los Angeles suburb. Grace enrolled Marilyn in singing, acting, and dancing classes...
