NATIVE ROOTS- HOW INDIANS ENRICHED AMERICA This book was very interesting. It stated many interesting facts about the first Americans. These were Native Americans, which were called Indians by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Surprisingly, the book kept my attention throughout it. It is really not something which I would normally be interested in, however they started each chapter out by giving real world situations. This made it much easier to understand. The book was also divided into many parts, each chapter describing a certain aspect of the early Native Americans’ lives and habits. It also described their early way of life and how the cultures survived over the many years of their existence. I like the way the book started off with a description of Americans today living with Indians in the area of Alaska. This was in a town known as Tukyoyatuk. Sometimes there is harmony in this area, between the engineers, radio programmers, and Indians, but sometimes arguments may erupt. Another item which really caught my attention and something I was really interested in was the pyramid mounds of dirt. The way they were so large and sculpted so perfectly. Also the way that they buried their dead there with all their riches, yet still managed to live atop it. One item, which I did not think was appropriate, was the way in which the author stated that the area is run down now. There are many busses which are rotted and rusted out, and many buildings which are run down and boarded up. The area was deserted due to the loss of tourism to the area. The Cahokia were also very interesting, with the way their civilization was set up and run. Rolls of copper were imported from the Great Lakes. Arrowheads were imported from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Ornamental cutouts, made of mica, were imported from North Carolina. Shells were also found, which had to be traded with others from around the Gulf of Mexico. Finally salt and lead were also found, which could have only come from Illinois. They also combined and formed a trading empire including Austria, Italy Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Greece, Denmark, Romania, and Switzerland.
